Innovation Analyst
There is an exciting opportunity for a Innovation Analyst to join Onni Capital in Vancouver. Onni Capital is a new investment and company building platform within the Onni Group. Operating at the intersection of a venture studio, private equity firm, and family office, we build new companies, invest in exceptional founders, and pursue opportunities where Onni's capital, operating platform, real estate portfolio, and industry relationships create a meaningful advantage. Onni Capital is being built from the ground up with the speed, ambition, and working style of a technology company. Our team works across venture creation, technology, private investments, fund investments, and special opportunities. This is a forward deployed role. You will use AI to build software, and you will also be the person who sits with the operator whose problem you are solving. Onni Innovation builds products inside Onni. Valorem, a property valuation and tax appeal platform, came out of this team. So did ScopeCycle, a scope management and procurement tool. More are coming. These are not internal prototypes that die in a demo. They get deployed into operating businesses, sold to external customers, and in some cases spun out as standalone companies. As an Innovation Analyst, you will find the problem, define it, build the first working version with AI assisted development tools, put it in front of real users, and decide with the team whether it deserves more investment. You sit under Onni Innovation, and you will deploy onto work across Valorem, Panni Consulting, and Onni's operating businesses depending on where you are most useful. This is a role for someone early in their career who is entrepreneurial, wants to build rather than analyse, and understands that AI tooling means a single motivated person can now do what used to take a team.
Responsibilities
- Find and define the problem — Work directly with operators, tenants, customers, and internal teams to understand workflows and find where time, money, or accuracy is being lost
- Find and define the problem — Translate what you learn into a clear problem statement and a product specification someone can act on
- Find and define the problem — Size the opportunity in terms that matter: revenue, operating cost, hours saved, cycle time, risk reduced
- Build — Build working software using AI assisted development tools, specifically Claude Code, as a core part of your daily workflow
- Build — Ship a first version fast, put it in front of real users, and iterate on what you learn rather than on what you assumed
- Build — Integrate with existing systems, external APIs, and third party services where the product needs it
- Build — Hand validated products to the engineering team for hardening into production systems, and stay involved through that transition
- Own the outcome — Design and run structured pilots with named users, defined success metrics, a deadline, and clear criteria for continuing or stopping
- Own the outcome — Onboard the first users personally, train them, and stay close enough to hear what is not working
- Own the outcome — Track adoption, feedback, revenue, cost, and measured impact after launch
- Own the outcome — Support go to market for products that graduate, including pricing, positioning, and early customer acquisition
- Own the outcome — Present what you built, what happened, and what you recommend directly to senior leadership
- Across the platform — Deploy onto Valorem, Panni Consulting engagements, or portfolio company work as priorities shift
- Across the platform — Research markets, competitors, technologies, and vendors to determine what should be built, bought, partnered, or ignored
- Across the platform — Document what you build, why you built it that way, and what you learned, so the team gets faster over time
- Across the platform — Contribute to internal product reviews, demonstrations, and Onni Capital events
- Products shipped: You have taken multiple problems from discovery through to a working product used by real people, not just demonstrated internally
- Fast validation: You can move from a credible problem to a testable first version in days or weeks rather than months
- Real adoption: Operators or customers choose to keep using what you built because it makes their work materially better
- Measured business impact: Your projects can demonstrate revenue generated, costs reduced, hours saved, cycle times improved, risk reduced, or another clearly defined business outcome
- Good investment decisions: You have helped identify which products deserve additional engineering and capital, and you have been willing to shut down projects quickly when the evidence is weak
Requirements
- Interest in business, engineering, computer science, product, economics, or a related field. Strong new graduates will be considered
- Evidence you have built and shipped something real. A product, a company, a prototype, an automation, an analytical tool, a community, or a side project with actual users. What you built matters more than where you studied
- Daily, fluent use of modern AI tools, including AI assisted development environments such as Claude Code, with the judgment to know when to trust output and when to verify it
- Working technical literacy. Comfort with APIs, data structures, SQL, basic scripting, and automation tools, or a demonstrated ability to learn technical systems quickly
- Genuine entrepreneurial instinct. You look at a broken process and want to fix it rather than complain about it
- Commercial judgment. You can connect a user problem to a business case and explain why something is worth building
- The ability to talk to people. Much of this job is sitting with an operator who is busy and getting them to tell you what actually slows them down
- Clear writing, and the ability to explain a technical idea to an executive without jargon
- A bias toward action and comfort making progress with incomplete information
- Comfort working in a small, fast moving team where responsibilities change as projects develop
- High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow through
- Nice to Have — Founder, side project, or startup experience
- Nice to Have — Experience with tools such as Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Linear, Slack, Supabase, or similar platforms
- Nice to Have — Familiarity with the modern TypeScript and React ecosystem, or with Python
- Nice to Have — Exposure to real estate, construction, hospitality, financial services, or another asset heavy industry
- Nice to Have — Experience with product practices such as customer discovery, user stories, and pilot design
- Nice to Have — Experience integrating LLMs into applications, including prompt engineering and evaluating output quality
Why join
You will not be handed a ticket queue. You will be handed a business problem and expected to come back with something working. The distance between you and the decision is short. The person whose workflow you are fixing is in the building or a phone call away. You can ship on Tuesday and watch someone use it on Wednesday. Onni's portfolio is a genuinely rare testing ground. Development, construction, property management, hospitality, finance, and investment businesses all sit inside one group, all with real operational problems and real budgets. Products get measured against actual revenue and actual cost, usually within weeks. Some of what you build will scale into a business. Some will be shut down quickly when the evidence does not support it. Both outcomes are the process working, and neither reflects badly on you. The path from here is real. Analysts on this team are expected to grow into product and engineering ownership, move into a portfolio company as an operator, or keep building inside Onni Capital. You will see a product from problem to outcome rather than one narrow slice. On a single product, you may be involved in: • Sitting with an operator and watching them do the job badly because their tools are bad • Writing the specification for what should replace it • Building the first working version yourself • Deploying it into an operating business and watching real users hit it • Discovering your assumption was wrong and changing direction • Presenting the result directly to senior executives • Handing it to engineering to harden into production • Deciding, with the team, whether it is worth continuing to invest in The expectation is high ownership. The learning curve and the potential impact are equally high. Onni Capital is creating a new headquarters in downtown Vancouver designed for builders, founders, investors, product teams, and portfolio companies, not traditional corporate administration. The space is intended to become a home for company creation, collaboration, product demonstrations, investment discussions, founder events, and the broader Onni Capital community. Team members will receive: • Direct exposure to senior Onni executives, investors, operators, developers, and founders • The opportunity to help launch products and businesses from the ground up • Access to Onni's operating businesses, technology resources, real estate portfolio, and investment platform • Competitive compensation and a discretionary performance bonus • A comprehensive company paid benefits package • An annual education and professional development allowance • Regular product demonstrations, founder sessions, investment discussions, and team events • Free access to a fully equipped gym • Friends and family rates across participating hospitality brands • Employee discounts at participating restaurants, retailers, fitness providers, and other businesses • A generous employee referral program Onni For over half a century, Onni has been building communities for people to live, work, and play. Our success reflects our commitment to our employees and partners, and our dedication to quality construction, innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. Our expertise expands across North America, with offices in Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, Seattle, Phoenix, and Chicago. AI Use This role may involve the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support research, analysis, content development, design, reporting, or operational efficiency. Employees are expected to use AI responsibly and in compliance with company policies, data privacy requirements, confidentiality obligations, and applicable laws. All AI-generated or AI-assisted outputs must be reviewed for accuracy, quality, and appropriateness before use. Employees are also expected to disclose when AI tools have been used in the creation of work and must not present AI-generated content as solely their own original work.
